My Story

Darryl, a former Australian Defence Force soldier, has successfully transitioned into a celebrated author. His journey began with meticulous research on the Platycerium species, consulting renowned experts in Australia and exploring rainforests across Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Borneo and more recently the Island of New Guinea. This extensive exploration culminated in the release of his highly successful debut book, “King of the Ferns: The Australian Staghorn Fern Experience.” In this comprehensive guide, Darryl shares tried-and-tested tips, personal anecdotes, and valuable resources to help enthusiasts grow these magnificent Australian staghorn ferns throughout their fern life cycle.

Following the success of his first book, Darryl invites readers on another enthralling journey, this time exploring Papua New Guinea and Indonesia in pursuit of the grandest staghorn fern of them all—the legendary ‘Queen Staghorn’ Platycerium wandae. Join him on this captivating expedition across the Island of New Guinea!

Sharing Knowledge

Darryl frequently enchants audiences at fern and garden clubs across southeast Queensland with his passionate presentations on “All Things Staghorns and Elkhorns.” His talks are designed to spread knowledge and educate fern enthusiasts about our majestic Platycerium species.

In addition, Darryl hosts regular workshops in Brisbane titled “An Afternoon with an Author and a Grower,” where participants can enjoy a glass of wine while learning about staghorns in a relaxed setting. These engaging workshops offer a hands-on experience in mounting their own staghorn fern, and each participant receives a copy of Darryl’s book, King of the Ferns – The Australian Staghorn Fern Experience.

Keep an eye out for Darryl’s next Platycerium workshop.
